Project Overview:
The DeSoto, Texas school district had safety, technology, and the environment in mind when developing their new school, the Katherine Johnson Magnet Technology Academy (KJMTA). KJMTA is a 109,500 square foot school building and home to over 900 students in grades K-5. The new academy focuses on bringing educational opportunities to more than 72% of the population that is considered economically disadvantaged.
Building Challenge:
To provide students with a strong foundation for tomorrow's jobs, the design team developed the building to support the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) outdoor learning curriculum. Along with engagement, technology, and the environment, another key area of focus was occupant safety. With the help of VT's doors with 90-minute fire ratings, the safety requirements for the school district were met.
VT’s Contribution:
VT provided over 160 doors for the new Katherine Johnson Magnet Technology Academy. A variety of doors with unique specifications were manufactured for this project including non-rated doors and 90-minute rated doors, doors with particleboard, structural composite lumber, and fire-rated cores. All of the doors feature quarter sliced, A-grade, cherry veneers with a clear finish. The doors feature components that are FSC certified and veneer faces that are sourced from an FSC controlled source, helping to contribute to LEED certification.
